Swapping miles for smiles

As part of our commitment to sustainability we decided to go further than the traditional bike week, and hold a sustainable travel month. Along with the difference we felt we could make to our carbon footprint we thought that it would be a great opportunity to raise funds for a good cause.

We set ourselves a target of 1500 swapped miles with a view to donating £1,000 to a local charity if we managed it. Each week was themed from a bike week through to car share karaoke for the final one, and all of our employees were encouraged to join in by way of a few incentives such as a breakfast morning and free bike checks; as well as knowing that just by leaving their car at home they would be contributing towards funding for Worthing Churches Homeless, a project very close to our hearts.

On Friday 10 August, having achieved 2413 miles with 40 staff members joining in the challenge, we were delighted to handover the cheque for £1,000 to John Holmstrom, chief executive and Charlie Chesman, community fundraiser from WCHP, who said, “It’s fantastic to see Worthing Homes share our vision to end local homelessness and for them to have raised money through such an innovate way. The thought and effort that each member of staff put into rethinking their travel once again shows their commitment to helping make a difference in our community. Thank you so much to all of Worthing Homes staff for caring about the community and our clients!”
