This week, in time for Earth Day, we were thrilled to earn our first ever gold award in the Sustainable Housing SHIFT environmental impact assessment, in recognition of the work we are doing to reduce the impact that we have on the environment.
SHIFT provide independent assessments of social landlords to see how they are performing against challenging environmental targets. They looked at all the homes we manage, as well as our offices and supply chain, and measured them against several environmental factors including carbon dioxide emissions, landfill waste generated, and water use.
We have successful secured 1st place for the biodiversity of our green spaces and the number of trees we manage, and ranked 10th place out of 40 social housing providers. We have been taking part in this assessment for three years and have seen an improvement in our score each year.
Key highlights from the SHIFT report show:
- 3rd place for the emissions related to our supply chain, thanks to our electric vans and the responsible nature of the contractors we work with.
- We have the 4th lowest carbon emissions from our offices.
- 5th place for the sustainability of our new build houses.
Sam, our Sustainability Officer said, “this is a huge achievement considering Worthing is considered one of the towns with the least amount of green space per person in the UK. We are extremely proud to have been awarded gold for our most recent sustainability assessment, as this really demonstrates that our efforts to become a sustainable housing provider are paying off.”
