Aids and adaptations
If you or someone you live with is finding it difficult to move about or use your home, we can help to make thing easier by providing you with aids and adaptations to help you or the person you live with live more independently.

Aids and adaptations can range from things like:
- grab rails
- level access shower
- stair lifts
- ramps
I think I need my home adapted. How do I get help?
Contact your Neighbourhood Housing Officer who will determine if minor works or major works will be required for the adaptation you may require. They will advise you what to do next.
Minor adaptations
If the adaptation is a minor adaptation, Worthing Homes will fund the works.
These include things like:
- lever taps (kitchen and bathrooms)
- handrails in bathrooms
- flashing smoke alarms
- flashing door bells
- window winding openers
You will need to obtain a recommendation for a minor adaptation from your doctor (GP) or other medical professional.
Worthing Homes will be able to fund minor works from its own budget up to a maximum value of £1,000 to any one property. More extensive works can be funded by a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG).
Major adaptations
If the adaptation is a major adaptation, you will need to apply for a disabled facilities grant from your local Council to pay for the works. The amount of the grant depends on your income, savings and investments. The maximum grant available is £25,000.
Major adaptations include things like:
- level access shower
- over bath shower
- stair lift
- external ramp
You will need to obtain a referral from an occupation therapist, Social and Caring Services. For more information contact Social Services Occupational Therapy on 01903 839 100 or go to www.westsussex.gov.uk.
