Sheltered Housing Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. "Can I apply if I own my own home?"
A. As we offer housing to people in housing need and on lower incomes, we wouldn't be able to help you but we can send you information about other local companies who provide sheltered housing.
Q. "Can I bring my pet?"
A . For applicants with cats or dogs, we are only able to offer flats with immediate outside access (we only have a few of this type of flat). Small cages animals such as budgies or goldfish would however, be very welcome.
Q . "Do I have to be over 60?"
A. Essentially, sheltered housing is for older people but we can consider applicants younger than sixty if they need the service that sheltered housing provides.
Q. "How much does it cost?"
A. Rents do vary depending on the size of the flat. You would be charged a weekly rent. If your income is lower you may be eligible for Housing Benefit and Supporting People Grant who may contribute to your rent. The level of your savings would affect your entitlement to benefits.
Q. "Can I have friends or relatives to stay?"
A. As your flat is your own home, you may have whoever you wish to stay as long as they consider the needs of neighbouring tenants. We do have an attractive guest room in each scheme, where they are welcome to stay.
Q. "What about furnishings and decorations in the flats?"
A. All flats are let in good decorative order and are let unfurnished. The previous tenant may have left behind carpets or curtains.
Q. "Are there any rules?"
A. You will be given a tenancy agreement when you move in. Common courtesy towards your neighbours is all that we ask!
Q. " What if I want to go away on holiday?"
A. We would ask that you inform the Scheme Manager of any intention to go away at anytime, just so that they don't worry about you. If you are claiming Housing Benefit and go away for more than one month, you are obliged to inform the local council.
Q. "Do I have to join in social activities?"
A. You are welcome to join in any social gatherings but there would be no pressure to do so if you prefer not to.
