FAQ: Sheltered housing
These are some of the most commonly asked questions about sheltered housing. If your question isn’t answered here, please give us a call!
Q. Can I apply if I own my own home?
A. As we offer housing to people in housing need and on lower incomes, we wouldn't be able to help you, but we can send you information about other local companies who provide sheltered housing.
Q. Can I bring my pet?
A . For applicants with cats or dogs, we are only able to offer flats with immediate outside access (we only have a few flats of this type). Small caged animals such as budgies or goldfish would however, be very welcome.
Q. Do I have to be over 60?
A. Sheltered housing is essentially for older people, but we can consider applicants younger than sixty if they need the service that sheltered housing provides.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. Rents do vary depending on the size of the flat and are charged weekly. If your income is lower you may be eligible for Housing Benefit and / or a Supporting People Grant to help you with your rent. The level of your savings will affect your entitlement to benefits.
Q. Can I have friends or relatives to stay?
A. As your flat is your own home, you may invite people to stay as you wish, as long as you consider the needs of neighbouring tenants. We do have an attractive guest room in each scheme, where they are also welcome to stay.
Q. What about furnishings and decorations in the flats?
A. All flats are let in good decorative order and are let unfurnished. The previous tenant may have left behind carpets or curtains.
Q. Are there any rules?
A. You will be given a tenancy agreement when you move in. Common courtesy towards your neighbours is all that we ask!
Q. What if I want to go away on holiday?
A. You are free to come and go as you please but we ask that you inform the support co-ordinator if you are going away for any length of time, so that they don't worry about you. Please remember if you are claiming Housing Benefit and are away for more than one month, you are obliged to inform the local council.
Q. Do I have to join in social activities?
A. You are welcome to join in any social gatherings but there is no pressure to do so if you prefer not to.
